Our story

2005

2005 Verena Ringler returned to Europe from Washington D.C. in 2004. Soon afterwards, she founds European Commons, based in Innsbruck, Austria, as a boutique for integrated, innovative and future-oriented endeavours that foster connection and synergies of cooperation in Europe.

2008

In her role as Deputy Head of Press and Public Affairs of a diplomatic team of the European Council in Pristina (ICO/EUSR), Verena Ringler develops and realizes an unusual, several weeks long Roadshow involving all ethnic groups and local as well as international representations.

2010

Awarded with an EU Young Journalist Prize for a piece in the magazine “brand eins”

2011

"Urban Solutions" – Reporting and authoring twenty case studies of the City of Vienna for an international traveling exhibition, commissioned by the predecessor organisation of Urban Innovation Vienna, Vienna's competence centre for urban future issues.

2012

Verena devises and leads an „Unconventional EU Summit“ with the Foresight team of Angela Wilkinson. For three days, 25 civic innovators work with 25 delegates from the world of European Union policies. They devise pathways for the future. Enabler: Network of European Foundations.

2013

Martin Speer and Vincent-Immanuel Herr contact Stiftung Mercator. In her role as project manager, Verena Ringler supports the duo from now onwards. The two develop the popular project "FreeInterrail", which the EU takes over and scales up massively.

2016

We realize the Open Situation Room at the Munich Security Conference with Dr. Thomas Bagger, then Head of Policy Planning at the German Federal Foreign Office.

2017

Verena Ringler introduces Emmanuel Macron on the stage of Berlin’s Humboldt University, in her role as Director of International Affairs of Mercator Foundation

2019

Francis Fukuyama, Marietje Schaake, Timothy Snyder, Felwine Sarr on stage of ERSTE Foundation‘s Tipping Point Talks, curated by Verena Ringler.

Verena Ringler as EU Commissioner to Brussels? This is what Austria's "neos" party proposes to Federal Chancellor Bierlein. Ringler is politically independent, and would introduce a new dossier to Brussels: EU-citizens relations.

2020

We initiate the virtual Situation Room for leadership teams in all sectors. German, English. Multidisciplinary and top-flight. International in scope.

2021

Regions and the European Green Deal. Verena initiates a year-long deep dive field study (in German). It probes key questions on the EU's green transition agenda among leading stakeholders and opinion leaders in Austrian regions outside Vienna, the capital. The study reveals eight policy recommendations to accelerate and deepen progress on the path to decarbonization and nature protection in Europe.

2022

Verena’s team goes 1st New European Bauhaus festival! We stage and broadcast a „Celebration of Soil, Seeds, and Senses“ at more than 2.000 meters above sea level. We feature 10 local experts and pioneers on soil health and soil care. Enabler: AGORA European Green Deal

2023

Verena delivers the Kathryn Knowles Women in International Affairs Lecture at her alma mater, the Johns Hopkins University’s SAIS Europe Campus in Bologna. Under the title, “Rising to the Task of Leadership: A European Perspective”, Verena invites today’s and tomorrow’s decision-makers to explore and unlock three frontier arenas of leadership in the European and international landscape.

2024

Watch Verena’s new TEDx Talk, „Why we need a civic CERN.“ – Climate transformation, she says, is a PEOPLE PROJECT. We – humanity – can master this. If we boost attention, investment, and non-tech innovation. After all, we went to the moon, and we build a new, gigantic tunnel that allows protons to clash at CERN. Who if not us.
